History:
The High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) replaced the M151 series jeeps. The HMMWV (also called: Humvee) is a light tactical vehicle for command and control, special purpose shelter carriers, and special purpose weapons platforms throughout all areas of the modern battlefield. It is equipped with a high performance diesel engine, automatic transmission and four wheel drive. This vehicle is air transportable and droppable by parachutes from a transport aircraft like the C-130. The vehicle's payload is ranging from 1125 - 1980 kg, depending on the model. The M1114 is the latest version of the HMMWV and is fitted with a passive up-armouring package developed by the O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt Armoring Company. This up-armouring package provides the soldiers with protection from 7.62 mm armour piercing attack through a full 360 degrees, from a 155mm artillery bursting overhead and from mine blasts under the body. The vehicle can be fitted with a wide range of weapon systems on the roof, including 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine guns or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher. The weapons platform can be traversed 360 degrees. Standard equipment on the M1114 includes automatic transmission, power steering and a heavy duty air conditioning system.
