History:
The Gaz-3937 Vodnik ("Waterman")
is a highly mobile multi-purpose amphibious vehicle with cross-country
capabilities and it can be seen as the Russian answer to the american
HMVVEE. Therfore it is also called the "Russian Hummer"
and is one of the latest products of the Arzamas automobile plant.
Although the purpose of the vehicle resembles those of its American
counterpart, the "Vodnik" surpasses the "Hum-Vee"
in many parameters. The Vodnik is a strange design with a narrow
cab and a large storage capacity. The vehicle consists of two
modules. The module in front includes the driver’s section
and the power section which are separated by a sealed wall. The
driver’s section of the Vodnik has two seats which are arranged
in a row, the driver sitting in front. The rear module is used
for personnel or cargo transportation or some special mobile units
like command centres and radar installations. Because of this
modular system, quick replacement of various rear modules on the
vehicle is possible even in field conditions. The Vodnik is completely
amphibious. It has a water-displacing hermetic hull, a 4x4-type
chassis, independent suspensions, a centralized system of tire-pressure
control and a comfortable 475-mm ground clearance. It has bulletproof
windows and tires. Its unique configuration allows the use of
26 different replaceable modules.
